This web report was developed by Liv, Nick, Silas and Randy of the Conservation Data Lab and Northern Michigan University with the following goals:

Liv Maynard

Liv Maynard

Liv is originally from the Grand Rapids area of Michigan, and had the privilege of growing up exploring the forests, lakes, and wetlands of the Lower Peninsula. She is a recent graduate from Northern Michigan University (NMU) with a B.S. in Environmental Science (natural resources emphasis) and a minor in Native American Studies. She has worked with Superior Watershed Partnership in the Great Lakes Climate Corps (GLCC) alongside US Forest Service and Keweenaw Bay Indian Community Natural Resources Department partners for the past two summers. Her studies at NMU and conservation work with GLCC deepened her passion for working outdoors and learning more about the natural world. In the off season, Liv works as a ski instructor, specializing in teaching children. She is looking forward to continuing conservation work in a position with the US Forest Service as a Hydrology Technician in Canjilon, New Mexico.

Liv and Nick (below) were responsible for the “Late Succession” Section of the report.

Nick Burns

Nick Burns

Nick graduated from Northern Michigan University in 2023 with a B.S. in Environmental Science and a Certificate in Geographic Information Systems. He has been working in environmental conservation for the past 6 summers in both the mountains of New Mexico and the forests of the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Nick enjoys the outdoors and hopes to combine his knowledge of environmental science and experience with GIS and land management in his future career.




Randy Swaty

Randy Swaty

Conservation ecologist with 20+ years’ experience working at scales from microbes to landscapes. Uses the best available scientific information combined with strong communication skills to inform decision-makers, influence policy, plan sustainable land management, and increase collaboration. Co-lead of the Conservation Data Lab, Ecologist with The Nature Conservancy and a Research Associate with Northern Michigan University.

Randy was responsible for the “Current” page, for deployment of the site, and will be the main contact for questions. He can be reached at rswaty@tnc.org.




Silas Pickhardt

Silas Pickhardt

Silas grew up in Madison, Wisconsin and moved to Marquette, Michigan in the fall of 2021 to pursue a degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Management at Northern Michigan University. After an internship with Oregon State University in the summer of 2023, he hopes to point his career in the direction of forestry in the coming years. He was introduced to the CDL after a short impromptu meeting with Randy. Outside of his career pursuit, Silas spends lots of time outside climbing, surfing, hiking and enjoys playing guitar as well.

Methods

Area of Interest

We aimed to delineate an analysis area that would both meet planning purposes of county officials in the central Upper Peninsula of Michigan (CUP) and be ecologically meaningful. To create the polygon by which we completed our analysis, we:

  1. Selected the 6 central-most counties from the Census Bureau County Dataset (500m). Exported this data as a shapefile.
  2. Used the ‘Select by Location’ tool with the U.S. HUC 8 Watershed Boundary from Data Basin and the 6 selected CUP counties as the ‘Selecting Features’. Data exported as a shapefile, projected to the NAD 1983 coordination system (WKID 5070).

General GIS

For initial data processing for all tabs we clipped raster datasets to the area of interest using the ‘Clip Raster’ tool. We retained the LANDFIRE standard projection (see LANDFIRE Standard Projections) and resolution. This work was completed in ArcGIS Pro.

Input Raster Datasets

  • LANDFIRE Existing Vegetation Type - Ecological Systems (EVT) for the ‘Ecosystems’ and ‘Wildfire Exposure’ tabs.
  • LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings spatial data (BpS) for the ‘Ecosystems’ and ‘Late Succession’ tabs.
  • LANDFIRE Biophysical Settings Reference Conditions Table for the ‘Late Succession’ tab.
  • LANDFIRE Succession Class (SCLS) for the ‘Late Succession’ tab.

All clipped datasets are available in the ‘data/spatial’ directory of the repository located here.

Tab-specific Methods

Ecosystems: After datasets were clipped as noted above, we used QGIS for cartography, limiting the legends in the maps for clarity. The attribute tables were exported for the charts. Attribute tables are located in the ‘data/’ directory of the repository located here, with the names ‘bps_aoi_attributes.csv’ and ‘evt_aoi_attributes.csv’.

Making of the chord diagram was a bit more involved, utilizing the following steps:

  1. Combined the BpS and EVT spatial datasets using the ‘Combine’ tool in ArcGIS Pro.
  2. Used the ‘Join field’ tool in ArcGIS pro to attach relevant attributes.
  3. Used a Pivot Table in Excel to format and clean data to make the final chord dataset (see bps2evt_chord.csv file in the ‘data/’ directory of this repo).

R code for all charts available in the ‘current.qmd’ file of this repo.

Late succession habitat: There are essentially two components of this analysis: 1) estimating reference amounts of late-succession, and quantifying current amounts of late succession. For this analysis we used the methods and code of Kelly and Swaty, 2024..

Wildfire Exposure:

This method was orignially developed and documented by Beverly et al., 2021, and adapted by us as documented in this document.

Software and Tools

This work was completed in ArcGIS Pro. R, R-Studio and QGIS were also used in the analyses. All code and datasets can be obtained by contacting Randy Swaty.
